In some way shape or form birthday celebrations have been around for a very long time, thousands of years in fact. As with many traditions, they evolve over time. Birthday celebrations today are commonly associated with friends, family, presents and cake! This is where we come in.

MegzCakes has made many different kinds of cakes for a variety of events and occasions. We love to create all cakes, but children's birthday cakes are a lot of fun for us. We love to make the kids favorite themes or characters come to life in the form of their very own birthday cake.

There is a cake that can be created to match any theme. Lots of kids love common tv shows or movie themes, such as Thomas the Train and Backyardigans, however, it doesn't end there. We have a few children's birthday cakes that have matching 'smash' or 'muck' cakes. This is a tradition for a child's first birthday. This cake is intended to be destroyed as part of the birthday celebrations. You know that picture your mom has of you or perhaps a sibling with a face full of cake and hands to match?! Well the smash cake is intended for exactly that, while the rest of the guests still have a wonderful cake to enjoy. We have included two pictures of smash cakes, the monkey themed cake and the princess themed cake.

Work with buttercream icing!

Buttercream is excellent to work with and there are many designs you can make with this type of cake frosting. It's is very easy to make, color, decorate with and the best part is it is very inexpensive.

**The Thomas the train, Princess and the Frog, Star Wars and Mario themed cakes were all made with buttercream icing.

Here is a simple buttercream icing recipe:

Ingredients

• 3 cups icing sugar
• 1/3 cup butter or margarine, softened
• 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla
• 1 or 2 tablespoons milk

Directions

• Mix together on low speed icing sugar, butter and vanilla for about 30 seconds.
• Add milk gradually until consistency is smooth and spreadable.
• Mix on medium-high speed to create a consistency and to eliminate lumps.

There is no limit on what you can create with a little imaganation, an upcoming birthday and buttercream icing. Be creative and have fun with your cakes. From a simple designs to a 3D figure of your child's favorite character or theme can go a long way for any child's birthday party. In our opinion all you need a good cake for a happy birthday!!
